T-38 Formation Crossunder

When the download is finished, you will see a short clip taken from #2 aircraft during a formation crossunder in the T-38. The flight lead can direct a crossunder any time it becomes necessary to reposition the wingman to the opposite side. This is usually done to facilitate the next planned maneuver. The crossunder is usually initiated from fingertip position, as in this clip, but it can be performed from route formation (wide fingertip) or at the conclusion of a rejoin. A flight lead may use the crossunder to keep the wingman from looking directly into the sun, or in a better position to maintain situational awareness. Initiated by a quick dip of the wing in the desired direction, it is a fluid maneuver but flown precisely to ensure that as the two aircraft cross flight paths, there is vertical and longitudinal separation.
